Electric power steering uses an electric motor to assist the steering. The steering ECU receives information from the variable controller that usually come from the vehicle speed sensor and engine speed sensor, near impossible on older vehicles. That is why you need this controller unit; it sends information to the ECU according to the position of the knob which in turn will determine the steering assistance level.
